The Tile, Marble and Terrazzo Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Local Union #7, will conduct a recruitment from January 15, 2014 through December 17, 2014 for three marble carver, cutter and setter apprentices; three terrazzo worker apprentices; and three tile setter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced on December 19, 2013 at Long Island City, New York.
Applications will be available in-person only at the International Masonry Institute, 12-07 44th Avenue, Long Island City, NY, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on 1/15/14, 3/26/14, 4/23/14, 5/28/14, 9/24/14, 10/29/14, and 12/17/14. Applications may also be obtained at 3281 Route 206 South, Bordentown, NJ, from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on 2/26/14, 6/25/14, and 11/26/14. Doors will open at 8 a.m. There will be no admittance after 8:30 a.m. Processing will be until 10 a.m. Application and exam will be done on the day of recruitment.
The Committee requires that applicants:
Must be at least 18 years old.Must have a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).Must take a Basic Assessment Skills Exam.Must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of any individual.Must have own transportation because the sponsor has work in both New York and New Jersey.Must sign an affidavit for physical performance, which may include the following:Working with hand tools and power tools, and being exposed to loud noise, hazardous machinery, hazardous voltages and respiratory irritants.Prolonged standing, climbing and walking, and repeated squatting, stretching, bending and working on knees.Working under extreme temperatures (inside and outside of buildings), ranging from freezing to extreme heat in the summer.Working in confined areas where movement is greatly limited.Lifting and moving heavy supplies and equipment up to 100 pounds, and working from ladders, scaffolds and personnel lifts that may exceed 100 feet.For further information, applicants should contact their nearest New York State Department of Labor office or Local Union #7 at 718-706-7229.
Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
