Special Weeks - Tulip Week - Girl in costume with tulipsImage ID: 1682599Spring has almost sprung, and with it arrives the latest series of Handmade Crafternoons! Meet fellow crafters, look at books and magazines from the Library's collections, and participate in DIY projects. This season we'll cross stitch on cards, create a watermark-inspired embroidery, and learn how easy English paper piecing can be. And, because our community of shared interests and enthusiasms is the heart of Handmade Crafternoons, YOU are invited to participate in a show-and-tell of your own creative works, endeavors, and works in progress at our April event! Below are descriptions of each of the spring events.
Remember, all events take place in the Margaret Liebman Berger Forum, on the second floor of the New York Public Library's historic Stephen A. Schwarzman Building on Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. All events are FREE and supplies are provided, but reservations are recommended because space is limited.
REGISTER USING THIS EASY FORM to reserve your spot any any of these events!
Saturday, March 15, 2014, 2 p.m.-4 p.m.: BiblioCraft Celebrates with Haley Pierson-Cox
My new book BiblioCraft: A Modern Crafter's Guide to Using Library Resources to Jumpstart Creative Projects will be hot off the presses (and available in the Library Shop). It's all about finding inspiration at the library (here at NYPL and beyond, all over the world). And on this day, we'll craft alongside some of the book's contributors--many of whose projects were inspired by NYPL collections (you can see the whole contributors list here). And one contributor, Haley Pierson-Cox of The Zen of Making, will discuss how her love of hand lettering led her to design a giant cross stitch artwork for BiblioCraft. She'll then show us how to recreate her design in miniature on card stock.Saturday, April 19, 2014, 2 p.m.-4: p.m.: Show-and-Tell What YOU Love to Make! (+ Watermark Embroidery)
Join us to celebrate the community of making which has blossomed during the five years of Handmade Crafternoons, and which inspired me to write BiblioCraft. Think of today as a grown-ups' show-and-tell: bring along and show us what you're making now or what you're really excited about having made. And if you design, teach classes, or otherwise make your living from your creative work, you are invited to share those details too. I'll share a favorite project from BiblioCraft, inspired by the rare books I work with--hand stitched watermark embroideries.Saturday, May 17, 2014, 2 p.m.-4 p.m.: English Paper Piecing with Jessica Alexandrakis
Jessica Alexandrakis is the author of Quilting on the Go: English Paper Piecing Projects You Can Take Anywhere. And at this event she'll show you how quilting and patchwork projects make excellent portable projects for longer trips or your daily commute, You'll make a bookmark project of fabrics and ribbon as you learn the basics of an easy hand stitching technique called English paper piecing.
