Free Programs at New Dorp Library: March 2014

March is full of sayings! Some people talk about the month as though it's an animal, giving it characteristics (like the "proud" lions that represent NYPL). Some call March a lamb — soft and innocent — while others throw insults at poor old March. They call it Madness. March Madness — what a terrible thing to say! I've never seen March go mad! Julius Caesar teaches us to beware of the Ides of March — March 15 — but if you're at the Library, you won't have much to worry about!

Take part in a picture book time, play your favorite games in the Teen Cafe, or jump into an exercise class like Zumba!

For Children:

Picture Book Time/Reading AloudFor ages 3 years and up.Enjoy hearing books read aloud, finger plays, action rhymes and coloring.Wednesdays, at 4 p.m.March 5, 12, 19 & 26

Baby Rhyme TimeFor ages birth to 1.5 years and caregiver.Friday, March 7, at 10:30 a.m.Bring your baby to an interactive program with books, gentle movement and songs.

Toddler Rhyme TimeFor ages 1.5 – 2.5 years and caregiver.Friday, March 14 at 10:30 a.m.Bring your toddler to an interactive program featuring books, finger rhymes & songs.

Preschool Program –(see our New Time & Day!)For ages 2.5 to 5 years and their caregiver.Tuesday, March 18, at 3:30 p.m.Enjoy books, finger plays, action rhymes, and a simple craft.

Free - Family Movies!Free family movies will be shown on some Saturdays, at 2 p.m.March 1, “The Croods”, March 8, “The Penguins of Madagascar: Operation Blowhole”,March 15, “Trooper and the Legend of the Golden Key” & March 29, “Turbo”.Children may take home a free coloring sheet of the movie character.

Myth Writing and CraftFor ages 6 to 12 yearsWrite your own myth story & create a mythological creature craft.Thursday, March 27 at 4 p.m.

Free Math & Reading TutoringFree math tutoring for children Pre-K to 8th gradeFree reading tutoring for children Pre-K to 3rd gradePresented by Staten Island Technical volunteers and Stuyvesant High School volunteers.Tuesdays from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM - Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., & 2 p.m. to 4:00.Space is limited. Register in person. Children receive about 20 minutes tutoring each.

For Teens:

Teen Café RemixedMarch 3/3, 3/10, 3/17, 3/242 - 4 p.m.Come join us for fun in the community room. Play your favorite games on the PS3 and the Wii. Come hang out with your friends! You can bring your snacks, soda, coffee, homework, iPod. Check out a laptop and browse the internet! For ages 12-18.

Teen ClubMarch 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 3/262 – 4 p.m.Your two favorite programs – Teen Art & Anime Club have combined !! Talk Anime and Draw Manga or Talk Manga and don’t draw Anime. It’s up to you. For ages 12 to 18.

Teen Advisory Group (TAG)March 3/142 – 4 p.m.Join our Teen Advisory Group and get hands on experience volunteering for the Library.Earn Community Service hours by attending our monthly meetings and giving us your input! What's happening in your world? What’s the hottest book, movie, or cd right now? What programs does the library need?This is a great way to meet new friends and really get involved in what goes on here at the New Dorp Library.

For Adults:

Bilingual Knitting and Crochet Club (English & Español)Mondays, March 3 & 10, 2014 at 4:30-5:30 p.m.Participants must supply their own yarn, needles, and hooks.

Stay Well Exercise ProgramTuesdays, March 4, 11, 18 & 25, 2014 at 1 p.m.-2 p.m.The Stay Well exercise program is geared for all seniors, ranging from the fit to those with disabilities. The curriculum includes aerobic exercises as well as routines designed to enhance balance, build muscle strength and aid in the performance of the tasks associated with daily living. Classes end with stress reduction exercises. Classes normally run 40 - 50 minutes and are held once a week.

Open LabWednesday, March 5, 2014 at 10:30-11:30 a.m.Are you having trouble with your email? Don’t know how to cut and paste? Curious about Twitter? Bring your technology questions and get one-on-one assistance. Registration begins on February 26, 2014.

Zumba WorkoutThursdays, March 6 & 20, 2014 at 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.Zumba is a fusion of Latin & international music combined with dance fitness moves. Come in sneakers and comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle.

MS Excel for BeginnersThursday, March 6, 2014, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.Learn the basics of working with spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel 2010. Topics include entering data and formulas, moving and copying data, formatting & print previewing worksheets. Registration begins on February 27, 2014.

Internet for BeginnersFriday, March 7, 2014, 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.An introduction to the Internet, including getting connected, using a web browser, and navigating web pages. Learn how to find information online using search engines and subject directories. Registration begins on February 28, 2014.

Lost and SoundTuesday, March 11, 2014, 2:30 p.m.Made by Lindsey Dryden (a partially deaf filmmaker) after her own hearing ability was called into doubt, the film weaves its way through a startling world of altered sound. (In conjunction with Reel Abilities Film Festival)
