So everyone knows the famous saying about how April showers will bring May flowers... But did you know about all the many different things going on all over the world this month?
Did you know that within the first week of May they hold the Kentucky Derby? Cinco De Mayo (May 5) is a huge celebration world wide, but originated in Mexico! New Zealand celebrates May as Music Month! All across the UK, people break out their pearly whites for National Smile Month! May 25th is Towel Day! That's the day you could celebrate the life and work of Mr. Douglas Adams, the author of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy!
Now we may not have a fancy title for our celebrations here at New Dorp Library this month... but we do have tons of programs for every single one of you to enjoy!
Hrm.... National New Dorp Library Appreciation month? Hey, we won't argue if you want to celebrate it... especially if it becomes year round!
For Children:“Picture Book Time/Reading Aloud” For ages 3 years and up. Wednesdays, at 4 p.m. May 7, 14, 21, 28 Enjoy hearing books read aloud, finger plays, action rhymes and coloring..
“Baby Rhyme Time” For ages birth through 17 months and their caregiver. Friday, May 16, at 10:30 a.m. Bring your baby to an interactive program featuring simple books, songs and gentle movement.
“Preschool Program” For ages 2 ½ to 5 years and their caregiver. Wednesday, May 6 3:30 p.m. Enjoy books, finger plays, action rhymes, and coloring.
“Free Math & Reading Tutoring” Free math tutoring for children Pre-K to 8 Free reading tutoring for children Pre-K to 3 Presented by Staten Island Technical volunteers and Stuyvesant High School volunteers. Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., & 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Space is limited. Register in person.
Free - Family Movies! Saturdays, at 2 p.m..“The Little Mermaid” on May 10,“Pokemon Lucario & the Mystery Mew” on May 17“Who lives in the sea?” on May 31 Children may take home a free coloring sheet of the movie character.
For Teens:Teen Café Remixed May 5, 12, 19 2:00 - 4 p.m. Come join us for fun in the community room. Play your favorite games on the PS3 and the Wii. Come hang out with your friends! You can bring your snacks, soda, coffee, homework, iPod. Check out a laptop and browse the internet! For ages 12-18.
Teen Club May 7, 14, 21, 28 2:00 – 4 p.m. Your two favorite programs – Teen Art & Anime Club have combined !! Talk Anime and Draw Manga or Talk Manga and don’t draw Anime. It’s up to you. For ages 12 to 18.
Teen Advisory Group (TAG) May 16 2:00 – 4 p.m. Join our Teen Advisory Group and get hands on experience volunteering for the Library. Earn Community Service hours by attending our monthly meetings and giving us your input! What's happening in your world? What’s the hottest book, movie, or cd right now? What programs does the library need? This is a great way to meet new friends and really get involved in what goes on here at the New Dorp Library. For ages 12-18.
For Adults:Zumba Workout Thursdays, May 1, 15, 29 at 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Zumba is a fusion of Latin & international music combined with dance fitness moves. Come in sneakers and comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle.
American Mah Jongg Fridays, May 2, 16 at 2:30-4:00 p.m. Join other American Mah Jongg enthusiasts for an afternoon of enjoyable play. If you have a Mah Jongg set and a Mah Jongg Card, please bring them. All levels welcome.
Adult Knitting and Crochet Club Saturdays, May 3, 17 at 10:30 a.m. - noon Participants must supply their own yarn, needles, small scissors, and the pattern you want to work on.
Stay Well Exercise Program Tuesdays, May 6, 13, 20, 27 at 1-2:00 p.m. The Stay Well exercise program is geared for all seniors, ranging from the fit to those with disabilities. The curriculum includes aerobic exercises as well as routines designed to enhance balance, build muscle strength and aid in the performance of the tasks associated with daily living. Classes end with stress reduction exercises. Classes normally run 40 - 50 minutes and are held once a week.
Wireless Wednesdays Wednesday, May 7 at 10:30-11:30 a.m. Wireless Wednesdays is laptop tutoring. Registration starts one week before the class. To pre-register for any program, please call (718) 351-2977.
