Free Programs at New Dorp Library: August 2013

Summer is almost over, come into the library and take advantage of all the great programs and events we will be offering! Check out our special event this month: our Art Gallery / Carnival on August 26th from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

To celebrate the end of the Summer Reading for Teens, we would like to welcome patrons of all ages to enjoy our Art Gallery and Carnival! Visit us and view the beautiful artwork done by staff and teens, then have fun playing some carnival games, win some prizes and take some silly pictures in our photobooth!

There is tons more to do, plus there is free candy!

This is for ALL AGES! No Registration Required!For Children

Costume Night at the Library!
For ages 3 years and up
Wear a costume and enjoy stories, action rhymes, blowing out the wishing candle, and more!
Thursday, August 22 at 6 p.m.
No preregistration needed.

Summer Reading Aloud
For ages 3 and up
Enjoy hearing books read aloud, finger plays, action rhymes and coloring.
Mondays and Fridays at 2 p.m. August 2, 5, 9, 12, 16, 19, 23 & 26
No preregistration is needed.

Toddler Rhyme Time
For ages 18 – 30 months (1½ - 2½ years) and caregiver
Bring your toddler to an interactive program featuring books, rhymes, and songs.
Friday, August 9th, at 10:30 a.m.
Preregistration is required and will start 1 week before.

Preschool Program
For ages 2½ - 5 years and caregiver
Enjoy books, finger plays, action rhymes and coloring.
Wednesday, August 14th, at 11 a.m.
Preregistration is required and will start 1 week before.

Family Movies
Free family movies will be shown on Saturdays, at 2 p.m.
“Cars 2” on August 17, and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” on August 24
Get a coloring sheet too! No preregistration needed.

Summer Reading Program Celebration
For the children (from birth through 11 years) who registered & participated at the New Dorp Library. Join Bob Basey for stories and songs at 2 p.m.
Get your reading certificates and more.

For Teens

Teen Café Remixed
August 8/5
2 - 4 p.m.
Come join us for fun in the community room. Play your favorite games on the PS3 and the Wii. Come hang out with your friends! You can bring your snacks, soda, coffee, homework, iPod. Check out a laptop and browse the internet! For ages 12-18.

Teen Club
August 8/7
2 – 4 p.m.
Your two favorite programs – Teen Art & Anime Club have combined! Talk Anime and Draw Manga or Talk Manga and don’t draw Anime. It’s up to you. For ages 12 to 18.

Teen Advisory Group (TAG)
August 8/9
2 – 4 p.m.
Join our Teen Advisory Group and get hands on experience volunteering for the Library.Earn Community Service hours by attending our monthly meetings and giving us your input! What's happening in your world? What’s the hottest book, movie, or cd right now? What programs does the Library need? This is a great way to meet new friends and really get involved in what goes on here at the New Dorp Library. For ages 12-18.

Teen Summer Reading Festival Carnival
August 8/26
10:30 - 4
The carnival is in town! The Teen Summer Reading Carnival that is. You are welcome to join in the on festivities for our summer reading celebration! Enjoy the wonderful Art work from Teens and Staff! Partake in some fun carnival games for free prizes or have a blast dressing up at the Photo Booth! There is tons more to do, plus there is free candy!

For Adults

Mah Jongg for Adults
Fridays, August 2 and 23, 2013 at 2:30-4 p.m.
Join other American Mah Jongg enthusiasts for an afternoon of enjoyable play. If you have a Mah Jongg set and a Mah Jongg Card, please bring them. All levels welcome.

Adult Knitting and Crochet Club
Saturdays, August 3 and 17, 2013 at 10:30 a.m.-noon
Participants must supply their own yarn, needles, small scissors, and the pattern you want to work on.

Knitting Group (in Spanish)
Mondays, August 5 and 12, 2013 at 4:30-5:30 p.m.
Participants must supply their own yarn, needles, and hooks.

Stay Well Exercise Program
Tuesdays, August 6, 13, 20 & 27, 2013 at 1-2 p.m.
The Stay Well exercise program is geared for all seniors, ranging from the fit to those with disabilities. The curriculum includes aerobic exercises as well as routines designed to enhance balance, build muscle strength and aid in the performance of the tasks associated with daily living. Classes end with stress reduction exercises. Classes normally run 40 - 50 minutes and are held once a week.

Wireless Wednesdays
Wednesday, August 7, 2013 @ 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Wireless Wednesdays is laptop tutoring. Registration starts one week before the class.
